JD Welsh Cup

The history of the Welsh Cup

The Welsh Cup was founded 145 years ago, in 1877. Since it started back in the 19th century, the most successful team has been Wrexham who have won the trophy twenty-three times. It is considered the most prestigious trophy in Wales.

Currently, the holders are The New Saints F.C. (eight titles) after their 3-2 win in the final against Penybont in May at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Newport City host Carmarthen on Saturday in the second round of the competition. Sam Houldsworth’s men were knocked out in the second qualifying round against Goytre last season, having lost on penalties following a 1-1 draw.

It is the first time that the club have reached this stage of the cup in over six years.

The Steelmen got past the challenge of Cefn Cribwr in the previous round to reach this stage and will try to take this opportunity with both hands.
