Undy Athletic 2-0 Newport City

August 12, 2022

Newport City continued their miserable run of form as they suffered their third successive defeat following a 2-0 loss against former JD Cymru South side, Undy Athletic.

Dealing with the hot weather was a mission for both teams, with City particularly struggling during the opening 45 minutes as the visitors started the game on fire. The first major opportunity of the game fell to Oliver Smith, whose 40 yard strike was tipped over by City keeper Marcel Nzarora. From the resulting corner, Undy went close again, but Chris Parry’s header drifted narrowly wide past the right post. Nzarora was also forced into another couple of saves, this time denying Dan Jarman and Sam Broadribb.

Following a brief stoppage for drinks, City’s luck finally ran out as Undy deservedly went in front. Dan Jarman collected a loose ball near the halfway line; and then burst his way through the City defence before firing into the bottom right hand corner. Things soon got worse for the Steelmen, as the hosts doubled their lead minutes later. Broadribb supplied a through ball into the area which was collected by James Gidney, allowing the latter to trick his way into the six yard box and slot a low finish into the left hand corner. Undy almost trebled their lead shortly before the interval as Dan Jarman advanced into the six yard box, but Nzarora denied him through producing a low block on this occasion.

City tried to respond before the break as Aaron Tyner fired an optimistic 40 yard strike just over the bar, while Liam Head was inches away from connecting on to a cross from Gareth Hole inside the six yard box.

 HT 0-2

Undy started the second half strongly; and continued to dominate the proceedings. Nzarora was forced into saves from Broadribb, Gidney and Parry; while Alex and Dan Jarman both sent individual efforts narrowly wide.

The hosts maintained their relentless pressure as they chased a third goal. Tom Wright came extremely close, but saw his thumping strike smack the underside of the bar before the ball bounced off the goal-line and scrambled away by the Steelmen. Dan Jarman also came close again as he sent a low shot into the side netting, while Jack Morgan saw his close range volley grasped by Nzarora.

City attempted to register a consolation goal, but the closest they came was through Martyn Mickiewicz whose sliding shot was blocked by the Undy defence. Despite the second half clean sheet, the Steelmen were ultimately forced to endure another defeat. Next up is a huge game away against fellow strugglers RTB Ebbw Vale as City look to finally get some points on the table and kick start their season.
