Newport City Vs Brecon Corries Preview
Newport City have made a positive start in the Ardal South East Division and next take on Brecon Corries at Newport Stadium on Wednesday night.
Sam Houldsworth’s side will be looking to carry on the positive results we’ve seen from his side so far this season.
The Steelmen have played four games so far (Each away from home), enjoying wins against Blaenavon Blues, Risca United and most recently, Undy AFC. They also lost to Caldicot Town, which means they sit fourth in the league table as things stand.
Manager Holdsworth spoke about how he’s feeling about the game: “I’m absolutely buzzing for it. Going away, of course for me it’s less organizing to do but it’s difficult, and all of our new signings haven’t played at home yet. I’m looking forward to it – it’s (The pitch) always like a carpet on the first game of the season.
“I’m hearing we’ve got a good crowd as well, juniors, and Brecon have got some juniors coming down, a lot of mascots. I think the matchday experience since we’ve got the new owners has been great.”
He was asked about the previous performances this season: “I don’t feel like we’ve played great. We’ve played well in patches but we haven’t really strung together a 90 minutes of good football.
“It sounds awful to say it but I think we’ve overachieved (So far), given the fact that we’ve got a load of new players.
“People will be thinking after signing the players we have that we should be expected to win games of football and I am, and I want us to win. But in the first five games, with Brecon to go, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy.
Brecon have had a difficult start to the season, winning one and losing three in the league, but Sam was eager to point out their qualities: “They’re a big threat aerially, they’re a big team.
“They’ve been in really bad form but we’ve been there and we were always a threat to teams. It’d be absolutely stupid to look past this as an easy game of football.
“3-0 to Undy, that’s a better result than we got. It’ll be a tough one but definitely one for the neutral, that’s for sure.”
This fixture was a high scoring one last season, with 4-3 and 3-2 wins for City.
Kick-off is at 19:15.
