Newport City 7-2 Treharris Athletic Western

Newport City arrested a run of four consecutive defeats by delivering an exhilarating performance against Treharris Athletic Western, as they recorded a thumping victory against the Lillywhites.

The Steelmen started the game on fire; and could have scored three times in the opening 10 minutes. The first opportunity came when Josh Bell struck a free kick from the edge of area narrowly wide. Rhyse Hudson then came close when his low strike inside area was grasped by Treharris keeper Shay O’Grady, before Hudson volleyed another close range effort over the bar.

It came as no surprise when City eventually took a deserved lead in the 13th minute. James Bloom nodded the ball into the path of Matt Green inside the area, allowing Green to tuck in a nice low finish. Boyed by the goal, the Steelmen doubled their lead just three minutes later when Ishi-David Okonmah powered in a sublime header from Josh Bell’s corner delivery.

The Steelmen continued to dominate and stretched their lead in the 27th minute, when a cross by Adam Kaplan was deflected into the net by Treharris defender Morgan Cole. City continued to cause rampage and added a fourth in the 38th minute, as Okonmah registered his second goal of the game with a thumping low finish following a corner.

The Steelmen continued to run riot and almost extended their lead as Okonmah, Green, Tom Hooper and Ryan Harris all came close for the hosts. City did however secure a fifth goal on the stroke of half time, as Hudson tucked in from close range.

HT 5-0

City restarted the game where they left off; and instantly scored a sixth goal just seconds after the interval. The goal came when a pass across the face of goal from Hudson handed Kofi Rowe a simple tap in. The Steelmen refused to relax; and almost scored again as both Rowe and Hudson came within a whisker of doubling their own goal tallies in the game.

City did eventually take their foot off the pedal for a brief period; and were punished as Treharris pulled a couple of goals back. The Lillywhites’ first goal came in the 55th minute, when Iestyn Thomas curled a free kick from edge of area into top left hand corner. They registered their second just seven minutes later, as Aladje Sani squeezed in a close range finish after the Steelmen failed to clear their lines.

City responded well and regained full control of the game. They subsequently added a seventh in the 77th minute, as Dean Clifford struck a magnificent 15 yard free kick into the bottom right hand corner. The Steelmen continued to threaten as Robert Atkinson and Hudson almost added an eighth goal in the dying stages, but saw their efforts drift narrowly wide. City were ultimately able to settle on a sensational victory which left them in seventh heaven.
